Unbreakable - Kami Garcia

They have said this reads like Supernatural fanfiction, but I've never seen the series, so I won't be able to comment on that and I'll just stick to the story.

Kennedy never believed in ghosts, until one tried to kill her (that's indeed a good reason to change your views). But unfortunately that's not all the ghosts wanted to achieve. They really want her dead. They also killed her mother. It's after her mother's death, seemingly a heart attack (secretly a death note at work, of course), that Kennedy learns her mother was part of some kind of sect killing demons/ghosts. As in most YA novels, her mother has never told her anything about this or the role she'll have to play. She's had no training whatsoever or anything else that could help her fight demons who might actually come after her as she's related to this sect. The -for the story conveniently- teenage children of all the murdered members of the sect gang together to fight the demon that is killing their loved ones. And possibly save the world.

Once again I was thinking, if only... Kennedy's mother had not withheld all this information for her without any reason. It never makes sense, and neither does it in this story.

If only... Their search would have made a bit more sense.

If only... There wouldn't have been a love triangle. Why did there have to be another love triangle? When will authors get bored using them (just like readers have already been bored to death for several years reading about them)? Why does it have to be the twin brothers? So many questions, so little answers. But still, I realised I don't really care about the love triangle to care about the answers.

Some scenes had a certain creepyness, as I was hoping, especially near the end when they visit an old orphanage and a prison. There rest of the book was enjoyable, but less thrilling even though they are constantly hunted down by the demon. I felt like I missed on some information on the ghosts/demons thing, but that might just be common knowledge that I lack. Part of me wants to know how the story continues, so one they I'm planning to read the second book in this series.

Unbreakable is the first book in the The Legion series.
